Pair of cased boxlock pocket pistols
signed "BOUTET & Fils" and numbered "4"

Many arms signed by Boutet have numbers on them, but far from all. This nice boxed pair of miniature pistols are in a box with tools needed for casting bullets and maintenance.
Nobody has so far found an explanation to the reason or system in this numbering.

The numbering found on small pocket pistols are nomally "1 " and "2" as they where normally ordered in pairs. Addtional numbering is seldom seen on pocket pistols, particularly if they are part of a gift of luxury weapons to dignitaries.

The elegant pair in the box with gilded decor below is therefore a rarity.

This pair of pistols are dated to around 1810 and the number "4" is rather low. The numbering isn't chronological, and therefore can not be what today are serial numbers.

Engraved throughout with Empire designs of Neo-classical laurel branches, flower heads and related small motifs to the exceptional standard characteristic of this maker. With turn-off short barrels with engraved muzzles, engraved box-lock actions each signed BOUTET ET FILS in capitals on the left, involving a larger decorated cursive letter B and inscribed A VERSAILLES on the right, fitted with sliding safety-catches and engraved folding triggers, the latter delicately concealed within the designs engraved on the underside of the actions, and with ebony butts cut with panels of fine chequering: in their original case contour-fitted for the rare seating of the pistols in a side-by-side standing position, lined in dark green baize, covered with burgundy morocco leather with tooled and gilt borders both inside and out, and the lid with the owner’s gilt-stamped monogram DM. Retaining its original full complement of accessories, comprising combined bullet mould, sprue-cutter and barrel wrench, three-position turnscrew, and pricker. The entire set preserved in fine untouched condition through.

Boutet has cosigned these pistols with his son Pierre-Nicolas Boutet, who was aged ca.21 around 1810 and had been working and learning with his father. Pierre-Nicolas Boutet was born on 2nd October 1789 and worked with his father in Versailles from 1804 at the age of 15. Within this period until the death of Pierre-Nicolas in 1816, Boutet signed select firearms Boutet et Fils. When Pierre died in 1816 Boutet continued cosigning with his deceased son.  A younger brother Achile probably also received a formation as gunsmith, but he chose a career as Navy Officer.

On the photo to the right "4" is visible on  both pistols behind the triggers in the bend of the handle.
Each of the screw-off barrels are numbered "1" and "2" on the photo.
